Riding mower causes 3-alarm barn fire

DARKE COUNTY – Emergency personnel responded to a 3-alarm barn fire on the 3900 block of State Route 121 South Sunday afternoon, just north of Fort Jefferson.

According to the homeowner’s son, a riding lawnmower housed in the 2-story aluminum sided barn, caught fire after briefly being used earlier to mow a portion of the yard.

An eye witness driving by the residence was the first to notice the fire and alerted the homowner’s son who was then mowing on a different tractor. The two reportedly tried to extinguish the smaller mower without success. The flames reached into a hay loft causing the upper part of the barn to catch fire.

The son was able to get a dog out of the barn before fire crews arrived. The mother and sister were not home at the time of the fire.

Several  firefighters were transported to Wayne HealthCare from what appeared to be heat related illnesses and smoke inhalation.  No other injuries were reported.
